Groundbreaking Ceremony for the New A&D Building

Friday, May 21st, marked the day of the A&D Groundbreaking Ceremony.
____As President of the Alumni Association, I was chosen to represent our Alumni. The politicians and builders spoke of the importance of having a new PS 59 for the young students of the neighborhood. Some spoke of having the "Only professional art high school"...the High School of Art & Design.
____I sat with mixed feelings, knowing the building that held many fond memories would soon be gone. Yet, I realized that like the previous buildings of our predecessor, the School of Industrial Art, our school is not just the building. Those that nurtured and were nurtured with creative excellence... will be watching. For young artist of our entire city the philosophy and spirit of A&D that MUST live on.
Michael Cheverino
President,
Art and Design Alumni Association

Dick Giordano (1932-2010)

Artist. Editor. Teacher. Friend
Dick Giordano loved comics. What the combination of words and pictures could do and say -- as well as what the combinations of writers and artists could do and say with those words and pictures -- showed Dick that his future was here.
____Exposed to comics as a child during a bout with Scarlet Fever, Dick made it his life long business to work in and around the fantastic characters whose exploits helped him during that tough time. First attending the School of Industrial Art in Manhattan (which later became the High School of Art and Design -- more on that later) Dick learned the ins and outs of producing commercial art for the comics and advertising worlds of the 1950s. Landing his first job at Charlton Comics in 1952, Dick subsequently worked his way up to the position of Editor-in-Chief and forged early professional and personal relationships that would last a lifetime. Having a Reunion?
Visit our Event Calendar and Reunions section to find out if your class is having a reunion. Or, if you're planning one you may have the information posted on our website, for free.
____Reunions are generally organized by the class presidents, but anyone who chooses to can plan one. While reunions are often held on the 10th, 20th or 25th anniversary years, they may be celebrated any year you decide to have one.
____Class reunions offer a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with old friends, reminisce about the past and enjoy the present. Click here to see how the Class of 1973 celebrated their 35th reunion in 2008. (Their reunion was significant because no yearbook was published the year they graduated.)
